Bloom - Latex Plant
Project type
Prop
Date
October 2022
Location
Nantgarw
This latex prop was the main antagonist of the student film ‘Bloom’. It was created from leather, latex and metal wire as well as jute rope for the stalks and vines surrounding the plant.
Two versions of this prop were made, one for a transformation effect and a fully transformed monster. These were used with a pre-purchased flower to imply a transformation from plant to monster.
Chrome tanned and chamois Leather was used to add volume to the petals of the artificial plants. Aluminium wire was glued between these layers to make the petals posable.
The petals were covered in several layers of coloured latex to create the effect of flower petals turned into flesh. Cotton fibre was added to the final layers of latex to create a fibrous texture,
In addition to the flower, jute rope was used to create vines and a stalk for the flower, covered in green latex. Wire was added and twisted around the rope to hold the stalk and ropes firm as well as to become posable.
